Hello friends!
Let's catch up. This documentary by the New York Times is on Hulu, & I absolutely recommend you watch it. It talks about Britney's early career, how the public perceived her, & of course, talks on her conservatorship.
Let me preface by saying, whether you're a fan or not, this deals with much bigger issues than just Britney Spears & her career & restraints. It touches on mental health, misogyny, & the pressures of being a young role model.
First, it covers Britney's background & early career. People who worked with her directly were interviewed, & give their take on who she was & what she was truly like. Then as her career skyrocketed, they replayed tv appearances & interviews she gave. From here we see the immediate prejudices she faced, mostly because of being a famous young woman (emphasis on woman).
It then switches focus to her personal life & also her relationship with the paparazzi. We see the effects of the tabloids, how the media treated her, & her famous act of shaving her hair. At this point, the conservatorship comes into play. & it is a lot to take in.
Then, she started to perform again, & post on social media. It's at this point where fans really began to notice something was wrong. There was a podcast made by fans specifically for dissecting her instagram posts/comments. The fans noticed recurring themes that seemed to be hinting at something more.
They started the #FreeBritney movement & spoke out against the conservatorship. Many people felt that she was capable of managing herself, or at least of choosing who should manage her. It showed footage of fans outside the court that was trying her case, as they read a play-by-play of what was going on.
The documentary ended with the court's current decision, and final words & thoughts from Britney's fans & friends. Whatever happens in the future, it's clear we just want the story told by Britney herself.
If you have any good show recommendations for me, or just general comments or suggestions, please send them my way! I truly love & appreciate all feedback.
Slainté!
Kathleen 💛
